About Streetskills
As a child gains more independence and moves from primary school to secondary school they need a personal safety plan. They need skills to travel safely on the streets or public transport and to deal with threats to their personal safety.
The StreetSkills program teaches parents and their children how to safely navigate situations they face daily in life. It initiates communication between parent and child and encourages ongoing family conversations about safety. It empowers young people by making them aware of their own safety and allows them to make decisions about their actions based on discussions previously held within the home.
Parents and their children plan the actions that will be taken in the event of unforeseen circumstances such as a missed bus, no credit on the mobile, spent train fare, a last minute opportunity to go to a new friend’s house or any other thing that may crop up before there is a chance to consult with mum or dad. Families receive valuable information to take home and develop at their own pace.
