Streetskills
Navigating Life

As children move from primary school to secondary school they increasingly come across all sorts of challenges and have to make decisions that affect their own personal safety. They will have to rely on their own judgement and StreetSkills teaches strategies to stay safe.

StreetSkills is a personal safety workshop for pre-teen children and their parents and will get both students and parents planning for the child’s personal safety as part of the transition from primary to secondary school.  We will introduce children to new skills  so they can assess risks, learn new behaviours  which will give them strategies for dealing with challenges. This empowers young people by making them aware of their own safety and allowing them to make decisions about their actions based on discussions previously held within the home.

At the same time Street Skills provides parents with an opportunity to plan with their child what action will be taken in the event of unforeseen circumstances such as a missed bus, spent train fare, or a last minute opportunity to go to a new friend’s house etc.  or any other thing that may crop up before there is a chance to consult with mum or dad!

The program covers:

safety fears, improving self confidence and assertiveness training, planning and practising for increased independence, bullying, cyber bullying, and internet safety.

StreetSkills is brought to you by the Safety House Association of Victoria Inc, a not for profit community organisation celebrating 30 years of child safety in the community.
